No. 1 seeds South Carolina, Louisville and Stanford all cruised, as did No. 2 seed Iowa

March Madness 2022: Women's NCAA Tournament first round scores from Day 1 of the Big Dance (2)

The first round of the 2022 Women's NCAA Tournament is under way and Day 1 is in the books. Friday's first round action saw the three No. 1 seeds that played dominate, and also a top National Player of the Year candidate put on a show. Lets take a look at some of the key moments and all of the scores from the first day of the Round of 64.

  • The South Carolina, the overall No. 1 seed after going wire-to-wire as the AP No. 1 team all season, justified their top ranking in their first-round matchup. South Carolina pummeled the Bison 79-21 in a game it led 44-4 at halftime.
  • Iowa's Caitlin Clark, the nation's leading scorer, made her 2022 NCAA Tournament debut with a bang, tallying 27 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in a 98-58 win over Illinois State
  • Louisville dominated Albany 83-51, and sophom*ore guard Hailey Van Lith led the way with 20 points, four rebounds and three steals
  • Stanford, the reigning national champion, held Montana State scoreless for the entire first period and finished the night just as strong with a dominating 78-37 victory in the Spokane Region.

Final: Iowa State 78, UT Arlington 71

After trailing by six after the first half, No. 3 seed Iowa State scored 43 to UT Arlington's 30 in the second to prevent an upset in Ames. Senior guard Ashley Joens went nuclear for Iowa State, dropping 36 points and 15 rebounds. UT Arlington's Starr Jacobs impressed in a losing effort, scoring 19 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Final: Stanford 78, Montana State 37

The No. 1 seed Cardinal used all 15 players, with 12 of them scoring at least two points. Junior guard Hannah Jump led the winning offense with 15 points. Junior forward Francesca Belibi had a significant contribution with a double double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Sophom*ore forward Chloe Brinks also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. No. 16 seed Montana State outscored Stanford 16-15 in the last quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats had lost control early in the game.

Halftime: Stanford 41, Montana State 12

No. 1 seed Stanford kept No. 16 seed Montana State scoreless in the first quarter while taking a 20-0 lead. This was only the second time ever a team has been held scoreless for an entireperiod in the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats started the game going 0-of-21 from the field. Only three players have scored for Montana State with Taylor Janssen's six points leading that offense. Stanford is shooting at 48.5% as a whole, with Francesca Belibi and Lexie Hull with scoring 11 and 10 points respectively.

Halftime: UT Arlington 41, Iowa State 35

An upset may be brewing in Ames, as No. 14 seed UT Arlington raced to a 41-35 halftime lead over No. 3 seed Iowa State. All seven UT Arlington players who've gotten minutes tonight have scored thus far, and the team-first approach seems to be working. Iowa State guard Ashley Joens is rapidly approaching a double-double already, as she posted 14 points and nine boards before halftime.

Final: Texas 70, Fairfield 52

No. 2 seed Texas handled its business against No. 15 seed Fairfield, winning 70-52 in Austin. The Longhorns' bench carried the team to victory, as its reserves outscored the Fairfield reserves 35-8. Freshman forward Aaliyah Martin brought the biggest punch off the Texas bench with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow Texas freshman Rori Harmon, a starter, had a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists.

Final: Georgia 70, Dayton 54

No. 1 seed Georgia took advantage of the free throw line to get a 16-point win over No. 11 seed Dayton. The Lady Bulldogs picked up 21 of their points from the charity line. In contrast, the Flyers only went on the free throw line four times all night. Georgia also outrebounded Dayton 49-31. Senior center Jenna Staiti led the winning offense with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field.

Final: Kansas 77, Georgia Tech 58

No. 8 seed Kansas fell behind No. 9 seed Georgia Tech 22-13 after the first quarter, but the deficit quickly became a distant memory. Kansas outscored Georgia Tech 64-36 the rest of the way, starting with an impressive 21-9 second quarter. Three Jayhawks players reached double digits in scoring, and junior guard Holly Kersgieter led the way with 19. Georgia Tech's Digna Strautmane was excellent in a losing effort, as the senior forward recorded 18 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

Halftime: Texas 39, Fairfield 18

The No. 1 seed Longhorns outshot the No. 15 seed Stags 45.5% to 27.3%, with the Stags only making six field goals. Texas outrebounded Fairfield 24-12 in the first two quarters, and registered 15 second-chance points. Neither team has a player in double figures yet, but Texas freshman guard Rori Harmon leads all scorers with nine points.
